DNA Testing

All our DNA testing is carried out by Genetic Technologies Australia.

DNA Testing of my dogs has begun and will be ongoing. We test for the prcd-PRA gene as well as DNA profiling of each dog. Although I have found a line of carriers of this disease I can now make an informed decision regarding the breeding of these dogs, ie. mate carriers to clear dogs only, so that no affected dogs will ever be produced by this kennel. That progeny in turn will be tested to determine if pups are Clear or Carriers. My aim is to eventually eliminate this gene from my breeding pool through careful breeding.

Here at Hibay and at our associated kennel, Mohawk, we are not only testing our current breeding stock we have started with our veterans to not only clear current lines but to clear our entire kennels as far back as possible.

Profiling

DNA profiling of each dog is just as important as the PRA gene testing. Proof of parentage of each dog is critical to maintain the integrity of the breeding lines. Dogs are identified by microchip and then swabbed (by an authorised collection agent) using a mouth buccal swab which is then sent to Genetic Technologies for testing. Testing this way ensures ANKC endorsement.

About prcd-PRA

Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA) is a disease that causes the retina of the eye to slowly degenerate over time. It results in the dog slowly loosing its sight and eventually going blind. There are a number of different forms of PRA. At this point in time we can use DNA tests for the prcd (Progressive Rod Cone Degeneration) form of the disease which is caused by a gene mutation. Other forms of the disease are ascertained by eye examinations by recognised veterinary ophthalmologists.

How prevalent the prcd-PRA disease is in Chinese Cresteds compared to other types of PRA has not yet been established. As more and more breeders participate in the DNA testing and open their results to the public only then will we gain a better understanding of the frequency of the gene within the Crested population as a whole. At this stage it does appear that prcd-PRA carriers are common with in the population but that other forms of PRA are also present.  With this in mind annual eye exams by veterinary ophthalmologists are also recommended, regardless of genetic testing results.
